1869 Henry Matisse born Dec. 31, 1869 at Le Cateau, Picardy, France
1881 Pablo Ruiz Picasso is borne in Malaga, Andalusia, Spain
1905 Henry Matisse and 11 others incl. Derain, Braque and Duffy exhibit at the Salon d'AutonomŽ. "The Fauves"
1907 Picasso completes Les Demoiselles d'Avignon Late that year, Apollinaire brings Braque to the gallery in Rue Ravignan where Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is hung. Braque was to be the first cubist painter,despite Picasso's pr-cursory work in this direction.
1907 -1914 Cubism, highly influential visual arts style of the 20th century that was created principally by the painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris.
1912(up to) The cubist work up to 1912 is known as "Analytical Cubism", concentrating on geometrical forms using subdued colors. The second phase, known as Synthetic Cubism, used more decorative shapes, stencilling, collage, and brighter colors. It was then that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut-up newspaper in their paintings.
1917 Early on in his career Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist, and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence.
1941 Matisse was diagnosed as having duodenal cancer and was permanently confined to a wheelchair. It was in this condition that he completed the magnificent Chapel of the Rosary in Vence.
1954 Henry Matisse dies on Nov. 3, in Nice, age 85
1873 Pablo Ruiz Picasso dies, age 92
