Melbourne University(1967). Taught at Preston Institute of Technology 1975-1976.
Lectured in Photography at the South Australian School of Art (1981-1983).
She was artist in residence in Sydney University in 1979 and held many workshops
on hand colouring prints. Included in the 1982 Adelaide Festival of the Arts
and in Eureka! Artists from Australia at the Serpentine gallery in London.
In 1985 she was awarded a six months grant to study at the Power Institute
studio in Paris. Included in the Australian National Gallery exhibition Big
Pictures : Australian photography 1975-1985 curated by Helen Ennis (1986) with
assistance from Kate Davidson. The exhibition included work by Virginia Coventry,
Bill Henson and Wesley Stacey. Included in the Australian National Gallery

Robert Ashton Born
in Melbourne in 1950. Studied Photography at Prahran College of the Arts. Graduated
with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) in 1970. He worked with Rennie Ellis and
for some time became his assistant curator for the Pentax Brummel's gallery
in Toorak Road , South Yarra, Melbourne.He was published in New Photography
Australia by the Australian Centre for Photography in 1984. In 1987 he held
a one person exhibition entitled Photogravure images at United Artists Gallery,
Melbourne. Included in the City of Waverley collection. His photograph The
Handstand was used by David Bennett for the cover of The Thousand Mile Stare

tenth annual invitation exhibition at W.A.I.T. His participation in group exhibitions

Mark Hinderaker A graduate student in Studio Art (Photography) at the University
of New Mexico. He also holds an M.A. in English from Monash University, Melbourne.
Published an interview with Beaumont Newhall in Light Vision Number 5. Hinderaker,
together with Mark Johnson, Ingeborg Tysson and Tamara Winikoff, published
the first issue of Photofile in Autumn 1983 on behalf of the Australian Centre
for Photography in Sydney. Was awarded the three month residency at the V.A.B.'s
studio in Tokyo from July 1988.
Douglas Holleley Born in Sydney in 1949. Graduated with a B.A. from Macquarie
University and then took a Masters of Fine Arts , Rochester, N.Y. 1976. Has
had his work published in the Graham Howe edited Australian Centre for Photography

Bernard Otto a successful gold miner became the patron to Holtermann Beaufoy
Merlin, the Photographer who recorded the gold diggings near Hill End together
with Charles Bayliss.Hill end and Gulong Photographs 1878: Bernard Otto Holtermann
and Charles Bayliss expose the largest wet - plate negatives on record (one
97 x 160 cm. and another 97 x 122 cm.) to add to their already huge 33 foot
(10 meter) panorama of Sydney Harbour which formed part of the Silver Medal
winning display at the 'Paris Exposition Universelle Internationale de 1878'
Loisa E. How 1821-1893. migrated from England in 1849, Loisa How made a considerable
number of outdoor portraits at the family home in Sydney. All but one of these
salted paper photographs which were taken in the 1850's depict male subjects.

Hawthorn. Exhibited at the National gallery of Victoria, with: "the Alphabet,
minus B"(1973) and also in the same year with Henry Talbot in an exhibition
called ÒEroticaÓ at Renie Ellis's Brummel's Gallery. At
the Arts Council gallery, Sydney, (1974), and the Australian Centre for Photography,
Sydney in 1976 and 1978.Has had his work published in the Graham Howe edited
Australian Centre for Photography publication entitled: The new photography,
Australia in 1974. She received a Overseas Travel Grant from the Visual Arts
Board in 1975 Her work is included in the Phillip Morris collection and she
is featured in:Aspects of the Phillip Morris Collection: Four Australian photographers
.Her best known photograph is Vale street. 1975. She died after a major illness

in 1981 he joined the curatorial staff A.N.G. as assistant curator .In 1985

Angela Lynckushka Born in 1947 in Melbourne. Self taught photographer who
began to use the camera in 1976. She has documented a number of community projects
and in 1985 she established the young womans photography collective in Melbourne.
Peter Lyssiotis Born in 1949 in Cyprus. immigrated to Australia with his family
in 1954. Studied Law at Monash University from 1970 to 1971 and Arts at La
Trobe University from 1972 to 1973 where he graduated with a B.A. (Hons.).
He is a self taught photographer and a member of the ÒDevelopmentsÓ
collective. He lives in Melbourne and teaches in a State Secondary School.
Lyssiotis has published several booklets of his photographs including: The
products of Wealth(1982), Shadows(1985) Industrial Woman(1986). He has also
published Journey of a wise Electron (Champion Books 1983) and Three Cheers

Charles Merewether Born in 1950. Studied literature and Art History at both,
Melbourne and Sydney Universities. Has taught in Art Schools and at the University
of Sydney. Over recent years he has been researching and writing on radical
culture (painting/photography/film) in Germany, Russia, Spain and Mexico. In
1983 he received a Visual Arts Board Grant and in 1985 a Mexican Government
scholarship to study contemporary latin American Culture. He has curated Art
and Social Commitment : an end to the city of dreams ( Australian radical art
of the thirties and forties) for the Art Gallery of New South Wales. (Sep 1984).

Catriona Moore is a Sydney writer and lectures in Art theory at the Nepean
College of Advanced Education
David Moore Born in 1927 in Sydney.Commenced his career as a photographer
in 1947 by joining the Russel Roberts studio. In 1948 he joined Max Dupain's
studio The only Australian photographer selected to be included in the prestigious
Family of man exhibition which was curated by Steichen and first mounted at
the Museum of modern art in New York. One of the key figures ( together with
Wes Stacey)in the development of the concept which culminated in the establishment
of the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney in November 1974. Has had
his work published in the Graham Howe edited Australian Centre for Photography
publication entitled: The new photography, Australia in 1974. Member of the
executive Committee of the A.C.P.under the directorship of Graham Howe in 1973/4.

Lillian L. Pitts 1872-1947 worked with photography from 1904 onwards in the
tiny town of Merrygum near Bairnsdale in Victoria. Although much of the work
of Lillian Pitts is of an amateur nature, she did some newspaper portrait work
and other straightforward press work such as a picture spread on harvesting.
She is known for her extensive journeys across Victoria and even Tasmania which
were undertaken to find landscape subjects. Lillian Pitts befriended James
P. Campbell in Tasmania and they exchanged a large quantity of correspondence
before and during his appointment as Australia's official war photographer
in Egypt during W.W.1
Philip Quirk Born in 1948 in Melbourne. Studied photography and film-making
at Prahran College of Advanced Education. Has had his work published in the
Graham Howe edited Australian Centre for Photography publication entitled:

Leonie Reisberg Born 1955 in Melbourne, Studied Photography at R.M.I.T. for
2 years and at Prahran College of Advanced Education for a further 2 Years.
After one year of teaching she went to U.S. to study for her Master of Fine
Arts at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. In 1978 she returned to Melbourne
to work as a Graphic artist before coming to Adelaide in 1979 were she took
up a lectureship in Photography at Torrens College. Head of Photography at
Torrens was and still is Ed Douglas.Her work is featured in the Art Gallery
of South Australia, the Polaroid collection in Amsterdam , the Art Institute
of Chicago and the Visual Arts Board.
Bob Rhodes Born in 1951 in Montclair, New Jersey U.S.A.. Self taught photographer.
Attended a two week workshop with Paul Cox. Has had his work published in the

Tony Robertson Born in 1953 in Sydney. Studied Arts at Sydney University.
From 1974 until it's dissolution in 1979 she worked at the Earthworks

the Woman's Art movement and the Woman's Liberation Movement has been a major
impetus for her work. Her work was included in the book The Critical Distance
Work with Photography/Politics/Writing (1986) edited by Virginia Coventry together

Syd Shelton Born in 1947 in Pontrefact , Yorkshire,England. Studied at Wakefield
School of Art and the Leeds College of Art, London. Lectured at the St.Martins
school of Art. Has had his work published in the Graham Howe edited Australian
Centre for Photography publication entitled: The new photography, Australia
in 1974.
Athol Shmith Born in Melbourne, 1914. Specialized in portraiture and advertising
illustration work. Elected Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and was
made a Vice Regal photographer in 1933. In 1935 he was made a Fellow to the
Royal Society of Arts in London.. 1938 marks the move by Shmith to his Collins
Street studio which became the centre for work on national advertising accounts,
social portraiture, fashion and wedding photography. Shmith photographed visiting
celebrities and dignitaries for the A.B.C. In 1950 John Cato joined the Collins
St. studio. Shmith , together with Eric Westbrook , H. Dacre and Albert Brown
founded the Department of photography at the National Gallery of Victoria in
1968. From 1971 to 1979 Shmith held the position of Senior lecturer in charge,
Department of photography at the School of Art and Design at the Prahran College
of Advanced Education. Shmith was commissioned in 1973 to visit the U.K.and
France to acquire photographic prints for the National Gallery of Victoria.
Shmith's work is represented in the Biblioteque National de Paris, Australian
National Gallery, Art Gallery of N.S.W., Phillip Morris Collection, National
Gallery of Victoria and many Private Collections. His major exhibitions were
'Anamorphic Images " with Paul Cox at Realités in 1973 and a major
retrospective at the Australian Centre of Photography in 1977 and the National
Gallery of Victoria under Isobel Crombie's curatorship in 1989.
Wolfgang Sievers Grew up in Weimar, Germany. Studied photography in Nazi occupied
Berlin under former Bauhaus teachers. Escaped military service by seeking asylum
in Australia. Enlisted in the A.I.F. and, along with other refugees from Germany
, was put to work loading and unloading trains in Albury for the duration of
W.W.2. His main subjects are industrial and commercial. Included in the City

Moved to Hobart in 1982 and has worked at the Tasmanian School of Art as lecturer
since that time. His photographs have been included in the Australian perspecta
1983 at the Art gallery of N.S.W., in Recent Australian Photography : From
the Kodak fund at the Australian national gallery in 1985 and Australian contemporary
photographers at the National Gallery, Victoria in 1987. Stevenson has had

Theodor Strehlow. Custodian of one of the largest and most valuable collections

in Australien, page 24 Kathy Strehlow has spent several years in unsuccessful
negotiations with the Northern Territories Government over the future of the "Strehlow
collection.".
Theodor (Ted) Strehlow (1908-1978) born in Australia to a Lutheran missionary
family who lived in the central Australian outback. Studied Lutheran religion
at the Adelaide University and after graduation returned to the outback with
the intention to record the "Aranda" culture. Was initiated into
the tribal community and named "Ingkata". He was allowed to film,
photograph and tape record sacred tribal ceremonies. Strehlow was awarded the
Chair of literature by the Adelaide University in 1946. Published "Aranda
Phoenetics and Grammar" and "Aranda traditions" as well as a
monumental record "Songs of central Australia". Sold photographs
to the German magazine Stern by breaching his position of tribal initiate and
it's consequent trust and privilege in order to gain financial rewards. On
his death in 1978 he left his second wife Kathy Strehlow as custodian of one
of the largest and most valuable collections of records of aboriginal culture
. The collection includes some 15 Kilometres of film material, 7000 colour
transparencies , thousands of genealogical records, tapes, 42 diaries and a

Oliver Strewe Born in 1950. worked as Photographers assistant in London 1969-1973.
He worked as a journalistic photographer in various Pacific locations since
the mid seventies. During the early 1980's he received a Grant from
the Australia Council to work with the Australian Workers Union. His work was
included in the book The Critical Distance Work with Photography/Politics/Writing
(1986) edited by Virginia Coventry together with the work of Micky Allan, Dr
Jocelyn Clarke, Virginia Coventry, Sandy Edwards, Michael Gallager, Jillian
Gibb, Helen Grace, Ponch Hawkes, Martyn Jolly, Peter Lyssiotis, Ruth Maddison,
Charles Merrewther and Toni Robertson .
Mark Strizic Born in Berlin, 1928. Arrived in Australia in 1950. Began to
work seriously as photographer after 1957. Lectured in photography at Preston
(Phillip) Institute of Technology (1975-1977). Was Lecturer in Charge of Photography
at Melbourne College of Advanced Education (1977-1982) and part-time lecturer
inPhotography at the Victorian College of the Arts (1982-1984) Exhibited Melbourne's
Twelfe Best Buildings at the National Gallery of Victoria with Athol Shmith
in 1958. Since that time Strizic has exhibited in a large number of solo and
group exhibitions both in Australia and overseas. Strizic had the inaugural
exhibition at Joice Evans'
Church Street Photographic Centre (Nov. 16 -Dec 4. 1977) Included in many State
and some Regional collections. Major bodies of Strizic'swork are held
by Biblioteque National de Paris, Museum of Art and Craft, Zagreb,Albury Regional
Art Cente, N.S.W., City of Waverley collection, Victoria, Australian National

Samuel Sweet ( better known as "Captain Samuel Sweet") Photographer.
Documented the Australian landscape during the 1870's. Captain Sweet produced
an album entitled : Views, northern Territory., Bridges etc.(the album is held

Suellen Symons Awarded a V.A.B.grant for a residency at the New York studio
between July and September 1988
Henry Talbot Photographer, was Head of Photography department at Phillip Institute
of Technology where he retired in 1983. His position was then awarded to Ian
Lobb, formerly a lecturer at Phillip Institute. Prior to his academic career,
Henry Talbot was a fashion photographer and he had a long business partnership
with Helmut Newton during the 1940's and 1950's . Since his retirement Henry
Talbot lives and works in Sydney.

Ingeborg Tyssen Born in 1945 in Voorburg, Holland.Immigrated to Australia
with her family in 1957. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Visual
Arts)in 1981 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Photography from Sydney College
of the Arts in 1982. Her work is included in the City of Waverley collection
Ingeborg Tyssen together with Mark Hinderaker, Mark Johnson and Tamara Winikoff
published the first issue of Photofile in Autumn 1983 on behalf of the Australian

Les Walkling Born in 1953 in Melbourne.Studied Science and Philosophy at Monash
University in Melbourne from 1973 to 1975. he began to photograph in 1975 and
studied with photographers Frederick Sommer and Emmet Gowin in the U.S. Teaches
at Philip Institute of Technology with Ian Lobb. Has been involved with William
Heimerman's Photographers gallery in various capacities including exhibiting
his own work and co-curating exhibitions. Included in the Australian National
Gallery exhibition entitled "Living in the 70's: Australian photographs" which

Senior lecturer in photography at Sydney College of the Arts. Head of the Photography
Department , Sydney College of the Arts since 1982. Started the Melbourne based
Photographers Gallery in Punt Road South Yarra together with Paul Cox. This
gallery was later taken over by Ian Lobb and William Heimerman. Has had his

'Future directions' to the A.C.P. public policy meeting on June 21,1986 (reprinted
in Photofile,Spring 1986 edition pp. 33-34).Gael Newton describes Anne Marie
Willis as one of the A.C.P's most steadfast critics.
